Twenty years later, the worldwide success of the Gipsy Project has revealed to the greatest number of people its profound acquaintances with Django’s art, which the current « Gipsy Quartet » continues to extend in a renewed way, in the company of saxophonist Franck Wolf.
Biréli’s passion for the master of the electric bass was waiting for his hour… It was during his meeting with Jaco that our guitarist took a lasting distance from the gypsy « cocoon » from which he came, in order to trace his own path. And it is on the fretless four-string instrument, which he masters with as much joy as the six that made him famous, that Lagrène intends to salute the memory of his mentor, with the help of the excellent Multiquarium Big Band, lead by André Charlier and Benoît Sourisse.
He presents the project « Remember Jaco Pastorius » under two formulas: Big Band and Quartet.
All those who know him also know Biréli’s attachment to the nobility of the strings rubbed. He also had the rare privilege of dialoguing with two of the inventors of the jazz violin. Stéphane Grappelli yesterday, Jean-Luc Ponty today, in a trio that spans the ocean to spread the woody vibration, maintained by Kyle Eastwood’s double bass.
We save the best for last! With Mino Cinélu, former partner of Miles Davis and member of Weather Report, and Larry Grenadier, travelling companion of Brad Mehldau and Pat Metheny, Biréli has just formed a trio that will make a mark. Between Lagrène’s acoustic guitar, subtly mixed with electro, Mino’s telepathic percussions and Larry’s groove engraved in marble, the communion is at its height. From perfect chords to elective affinities, music finds itself dreaming of a new future. Max Robin
